Hans Maršálek died in the night of 8–9 December 2011 at the age of ninety-seven. As the link between the former inmates of Mauthausen concentration camp and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, he played a prominent role in the development of the Mauthausen Memorial.
He was not only a survivor and chronicler of Mauthausen but also the founder of the museum and archive of the Mauthausen Memorial. Everything that takes place today in and around the Memorial is based on his work. He laid the foundations of what we work for today. His constant admonitions about Fascism, Nazism, racism and right-wing extremism still guide us today in our task of commemoration and remembrance.
